    • Is There a Cost to Self-Improvement?

Posted at 10:01 pm by Lisa K, on October 23, 2026

      Dear Diary,

I’ve spent lots of time thinking about my place in this world. Our experiences, sometimes traumatic, sometimes transformative, shape the ways we interact with the world around us. Some of the patterns we develop are protective, others defensive, and still others emerge from our efforts to break free from the patterns we’ve come to recognize in ourselves. Each of us experiences and understands life through a perspective uniquely shaped by our own experiences and personalities.

In my personal journey, finding activities that allowed me to be physically active was when I truly felt I could express myself freely. Through movement, I could feel into deeper places within myself and experience something that words and conventional communication could never fully describe.

When I discovered Ashtanga yoga, the combination of breath, ethical principles for how we treat ourselves and others, the physical practice of asana and the exploration of the mind were a sort of jackpot. These aspects of yoga offered me ways to explore myself that I hadn’t experienced before.

Through yoga, I’ve learned the value of turning my attention inward. Practices like Pratyahara where we attempt to withdraw our senses from external distraction and Dharana which is the practice of sustained concentration could be found through my asana practice. Finding them has given me space to observe, reflect and understand aspects of myself that I might have otherwise overlooked.

The things I’ve discovered about myself and the ways I’ve worked to address them have contributed to a deepening awareness. I’ve spent years searching for ways to improve myself, to better understand how I show up for others, to consider people and situations from as many perspectives as I can imagine and to discover what is truly important to me.

I’m also beginning to understand that self-awareness without self-acceptance can become an endless process of self-correction. The more we learn about ourselves, the more we may find to question, examine and maybe even criticize. But does every discovery require change? Does recognizing an imperfection mean that we must work to overcome it?

In Patanjali’s Yoga Sūtras, there is discussion about an awareness that observes without becoming entangled in the fluctuations of the mind. It makes me wonder, maybe I’ve spent so much time examining what I see within myself that I’ve forgotten what it means to simply be the observer. To recognize what arises within me without attaching a need to change anything.

This doesn’t mean ignoring the parts of myself that genuinely deserve attention. Rather it is to recognize that growth doesn’t always have to begin with the belief that something is wrong.

I believe deeply in the value of self-reflection and developing awareness.

      But I feel tired.

Not of growing or learning, but of approaching myself as though there’s usually something to be fixed.

What about enjoying who I am now more?

      What about Santosha?

In yoga philosophy, Santosha is the practice of cultivating contentment with what is, rather than constantly seeking something different. It doesn’t ask us to abandon growth or curiosity, but maybe it’s more of an invitation to learn that contentment and growth can exist together.

My journey has been fruitful, but I believe it has lacked balance.

I cannot change the past, and I don’t want to spend too much time worrying about the future. The meaning of the present moment has taken on yet another layer for me.

I want to experience what it feels like to be here more, in this place of knowing and recognizing myself. Not with conceit or arrogance but with humility, gratitude for everything that has shaped me and forgiveness too.

Maybe I can continue learning, exploring and growing without approaching myself as someone who needs to be improved.

Maybe the real question I have been sitting with is – Can we continue to grow without believing that who we are today is somehow incomplete?

And with that, I will end this entry.

      Love,

      Lisa

    • Living in the Moment – Entry Two

Posted at 6:44 pm by Lisa K, on July 10, 2025

      Dear diary,

I thought about this series of living in the moment and felt so warm and fuzzy. It’s a little funny but I am enjoying this time set aside to write about my appreciation for these little moments, am I too much? The whole process of it is such a feel good sorta time.

Anyways, something I have been working towards for some time has come to fruition this summer. It is the ability to spend more time with my kids. Less work and more time has not come easily, but it has come. I look at my kids and lovingly appreciate how much they’ve grown. The days of rocking them to sleep or picking them up have been over for some time. I asked my daughter the other day if she remembered the last time I picked her up. She smirked at me, walked over and put her arms around my neck and legs around my body and said, “Today”. I almost cried. It was the sweetest response she could ever have given. Then she hugged me and told me she loved me. I told her I loved her too. In that moment, I felt filled with joy, overwhelmed with love and truly grateful.

These last few weeks have been pretty magnificent. I have read to my kids, cooked with them, gone for walks to the ice cream shop, taken them places, spent time with friends and family, done nothing together (one of my personal favourites) and it has been really special. I’ve often thought about how they will soon be older and how glad I am for this time with them.

Periodically, I tend to get caught up in thinking about all the future things I have to do or the lack of time and seemingly speedy way that it slips away before me. Right now, time is soft and slow. There is nothing else for me to do…but enjoy living in the moment.

Life is short. Time doesn’t stop. Focusing on how we make use of the time we have is all we can do to guide life in the direction we desire. Creators of our experiences, choreographers of our own existence, we each have the power to carve out the path that is right for us. Practicing yoga all these years has really highlighted the importance of being present and content with what I have. The lessons are really never ending.

And with that, this entry draws to a close. Best wishes until next time.

P.S. I saw the rainbow in the cover image for this post last night, it was a magical moment.

      Love,

      Lisa xo

    • Vishuddha💫

Posted at 4:56 pm by Lisa K, on August 13, 2020

      her throat felt swollen

      tight with a lump

      things that she felt

      just wouldn’t come out

she tucked it away and ignored it

but the feelings continued to stew

if she left it for too long

worse things would start to brew

a vice grip on her emotions

she tried to forget them and go on

      further away she pushed herself

      until she was withdrawn

      it spread into her psyche

her worth was marred in doubt

      she told herself stories

there seemed to be no way out

      when it got too much

she’d fix enough to get her through

but soon that wasn’t good enough

there was more work she had to do

      slowly she worked and soon

it was clear what had to be done

she had to find her courage

not continue to try and run

      she searched for her courage

      her thoughts began to change

she dug deep down to find it

things no longer felt so strange

      that familiar feeling of knowing

      expressing herself without fear

once again found its rightful place

and all the worry could disappear

    • Hope is a light✨

Posted at 11:25 pm by Lisa K, on May 1, 2020

Hope is a light that shines from within

It keeps me going when strife creeps in

When I feel uneasy or anxiety comes up

It’s what I cling to when feelings run amuck

The frayed edges of doubt make me insecure

my mind is spinning and I feel unsure

I breathe in deeply and focus inside

soon hope will find me and be my guide

An ocean of currents brings unknowns

the  sea in my mind is in a cyclone

anchoring down I plead for some peace

just then my light ignites and a great hope is released

    • The Umbrella

Posted at 10:58 pm by Lisa K, on December 27, 2019

      I looked at the window

It was blurred by the rain

      It was unrelenting and loud

As it whipped up on the pane

      I stood there and stared

      The moment was long

      Like a slow motion movie

      I felt something was wrong

      You were standing alone

      Under your umbrella out there

It was strange to see you

The wind was blowing your hair

I ran out to stand with you

      So you wouldn’t be alone

      Storms come and they go

      What they bring is unknown

      We’ll weather that storm

      Strong together us two

      No matter what happens

I will be there for you.

    • Jaded Faith✨

Posted at 4:22 pm by Lisa K, on December 1, 2019

      Looking desperately for something

      Imagine what could it be?

Just a place to feel loved

Where there is not any fee

      .

      Where appearances are nothing

But the look in your eye

      That alluring beauty within

      Far too bright to deny

      .

      Things that look perfect

      Are not what they seem

      If you aren’t careful

      Harsh judgments will stream

      .

      Everyone has shadows

      A darkness they keep

      And those stares of disapproval

      Gouge down far too deep

      .

      Faith in true goodness

It’s been lost for some time

      Everyone is looking

So they can’t be taken while blind

      .

But when it’s real it’s ignored

      Like it can’t possibly persist

      Nothing seems to be trusted

      How can we all exist?

      .

      Give faith to that feeling

      You know it inside

      Your gut isn’t lying

      Don’t enable fear to decide

      .

      It’s real, feel it,

      it wants you to see

That if you will receive it

      Forever true it will be

    • The Missing Piece

Posted at 3:48 pm by Lisa K, on October 20, 2019

With so many on the table

      How could you already know

That an important piece is missing

You can’t go on until it shows

I scramble to turn them all over

Try to see the picture in my mind

      Nothing comes up clearly

      I don’t think it’s something I can find

      Life can be so dirty

A mess you can’t seem to keep clean

Trying to make some sense of it

To know what it all could mean

      I step back for perspective

There’s no rush to know it all

      Sitting with an uneasy feeling

But knowing that it’s still safe to fall

Cause you’ll be there to catch me

I feel you gently let me down

At least I’m not alone here

And I like the way that sounds

That piece that had been missing

There’s no worry cause it’s here

All that time I spent wondering

Now everything is sweet and clear

    • My Reason

Posted at 10:46 pm by Lisa K, on October 18, 2019

I’ve got no place I’m headed

      Nowhere I feel at home

I’ll travel the world to seek something

Just not sure what I’m looking for…

      Trying to find a reason

To go on in this world of pain

Can’t find the beauty in the sunshine

All I can feel is the cold rain

One day I saw you there

I stopped running and saw where I belong

You gave me this sudden feeling

I couldn’t breathe it was so strong

      Now I have a meaning

and it feels like the world was meant for me

For me to be with you

Cause loving you is all I need
